Cyberghost VPN vs NordVPN

Two heavyweights of the VPN world go head to head in an unsurprisingly fierce battle. With a stunning array of top-of-the-range features (predominantly security, servers and speed) you won’t go far wrong with either provider. However, there can only be one winner, and NordVPN steals it with consistently faster speeds across a range of activity.

Cyberghost and NordVPN are two of the most successful and critically acclaimed VPNs on the market, offering a range of excellent functions aimed at the security-conscious.

But which is the superior product? We’ve tested the key features of each VPN and compared them to help you decide which is most suitable for your needs.

Speed

The trade-off for increased security and flexibility when using a VPN is that you lose a proportion of your internet speed.

Some VPNs perform better in this regard then others, however, and NordVPN remains one of the market leaders.

In fact, when comparing their speeds side by side, NordVPN offered consistently better speeds. In our tests we saw NordVPN dropping just 8% download speed when connected whereas Cyberghost dropped 20.7% – not a huge difference, but potentially enough to affect your streaming if you’re downloading at the same time.

Servers

The more servers your VPN can offer, the better from the user’s perspective as it allows you to find fast, stable connections more easily.

While NordVPN has traditionally been the market leader in this area, recent improvements to their product mean that Cyberghost now scores very highly with regard to the number of servers it offers.

Boasting 6,300 servers spanning 90 countries, Cyberghost significantly outperforms its rival – NordVPN has around 5,500 servers in 59 countries.

Cyberghost’s strategy of providing a sizeable number of servers in as many places as possible means you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to region-specific content, potentially allowing you to enjoy a much wider range of shows from around the world.

Features

NordVPN’s superb reputation is built on its excellent security features, and the use of 256-bit AES encryption and 4096-bit RSA keys ensures that if privacy is your priority, it won’t let you down.

Cyberghost uses the same technology, but with a few minor issues that let it down.

For example, while NordVPN allows the user to set up automatic network protection as soon as you connect to a wireless network, Cyberghost only provides this features when connecting to networks you have used before – which could be a problem if you’re connecting via a public Wi-Fi service in a new place.

However, in other areas Cyberghost has the edge over NordVPN, offering customizable kill switch protection across both desktop and mobile versions. The kill switch feature protects your privacy by stopping your internet connection completely when you get disconnected from the VPN server, but Cyberghost allows you to set ‘safe’ applications that can continue sending data when the VPN server disconnects on both their desktop and mobile versions, whereas NordVPN only offers this on their desktop version.

The variety of unique features offered by each product makes it difficult to pick a clear winner, but NordVPN’s slightly stronger security settings give it a narrow victory.

Streaming

Unlocking region-specific content is one of the most popular uses of a VPN, allowing you to watch programmes or play games that would otherwise be unavailable in your country.

On-demand services such as Netflix and Hulu offer different libraries in different regions, so if you’re in the US but there’s a particular show you like that is only available on Netflix in the UK, a VPN may be your only way to access it.

Both Cyberghost and NordVPN offer unblocking capabilities for most major streaming applications, although Cyberghost has a slightly wider range, unblocking ABC and some European Netflix libraries that NordVPN does not allow.

However, it is worth bearing in mind that NordVPN’s obfuscation technology allows you to view Chinese content where Cyberghost (and many other VPNs) does not. The famed ‘Great Firewall’ of China heavily protects the country’s content, and NordVPN is almost unique in its ability to offer access.

Cyberghost probably just has the better offering here, but if you need access to Chinese content then Nordvpn is the better bet.

Torrenting

If you’re a regular torrent user, you’ll need a VPN to ensure your activity is secure from prying eyes.

But as we’ve established already, a VPN is likely to hamper your download speeds to some extent, and torrenting requires a reliable, fast connection to ensure downloads can be completed quickly, particularly if you’re downloading large files.

While some VPNs no longer allow access to P2P torrenting applications due to their debated legality, both Cyberghost and NordVPN do offer secure torrenting on servers optimised for P2P data transfer offering uninterrupted downloads at impressive speeds.

Ultimately, the speeds that NordVPN is capable of maintaining make it the superior product if you use torrenting software on a regular basis.

Gaming

The increasing data usage of modern games makes internet speed a key consideration, and some users have found that their ISP ‘chokes’ their bandwidth during peak hours, preventing them from reaching top download speeds – which can make playing new games a frustrating, lag-filled experience.

Installing a VPN allows you to hide your internet activity from your ISP, making it more difficult for them to limit your download speeds.

Increasingly on current-gen consoles, the release dates of new games are staggered around the world – often becoming available in Japan before they reach the US or Europe.

They may also be locked to specific regions, preventing you from accessing those early-release copies from abroad. But as you’ve probably figured by now, a VPN allows you to circumnavigate this problem, giving you instant access to the games on their initial release date.

Cyberghost and NordVPN both allow you to gain access to region-blocked games and prevent your ISP from limiting your bandwidth. So once again it comes down to speed – and NordVPN’s faster connections ensure it is the superior product if you’re a dedicated gamer.

Free Trials

NordVPN’s month-long trial is generous by modern standards, allowing you plenty of time to understand how it works and explore the various features it has to offer.

Cyberghost has stopped its 7-day trial and replaced it with a no-quibble money-back guarantee that applies for 14 days if you have a monthly subscription, and 45 days for subscriptions of six months or longer – so you can potentially enjoy a longer trial period, but if you choose not to continue it, you need to cancel it yourself.

Other Considerations

Number of devices
NordVPN provides security for up to six simultaneous connections. Cyberghost allows you to connect up to seven.
Price

NordVPN’s prices start from $11.95 per month, whereas Cyberghost costs $12.99 a month making it one of the more expensive VPNs on the market.

However, both products offer large reductions if you take out a longer-term plan – Cyberghost can be available for as little as $2.50, whereas a one-year NordVPN subscription works out at $5.75 per month.

Setup

The websites of both Cyberghost and NordVPN provide step-by-step instructions on how to install your VPN and make sure it is working.

The Verdict

Wow. These two really run a close race in terms of their offerings.

There are some unique, quirky features that might be essential for you – like being able to connect to China for example – but otherwise Nordvpn and Cyberghost are neck and neck.

Although Cyberghost’s superior ability to unblock region-specific content makes it a worthy contender, an array of security features and faster speeds mean that NordVPN is the better product overall.

However, each of these VPNs have their own unique benefits, so it’s important that you read through what each has to offer before making your decision.
