Ahrefs vs Semrush vs SE Ranking comes down to price, tracking limits and focus: SE Ranking lists the most daily tracked keywords at entry level (2,000 for $129 a month, against 750 for Ahrefs at $129 and 500 for Semrush at $139), Ahrefs is most often described as the backlink specialist, and Semrush is the broadest and most expensive suite. This is desk research from vendor pricing pages and review platforms, not hands-on testing, and G2 and other platform ratings are too close to separate the three.
Semrush or Ahrefs or SE Ranking: which fits which buyer
- Choose SE Ranking if budget and a simple interface matter most, or if you track rankings for local SEO by city or region.
- Choose Ahrefs if backlink analysis and content research are core SEO work for you.
- Use Semrush if you want one seo platform for search engine optimization that also covers writing, advertising research and more, and you accept the higher price.
The rest of this post explains where those summaries come from and where the evidence is weak.
Ahrefs vs Semrush vs SE Ranking: published pricing
Plan structures differ, so a plan-by-plan match is imperfect. The table shows the vendor-listed entry paid plans and the next tier up.
| Tool | Entry paid plan | Next tier | Rank tracking limit on those plans |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ahrefs | Lite $129 | Standard $249 | 750 keywords (Lite), 2,000 (Standard) |
| Semrush | SEO $139 | Starter $199 | 500 keywords, tracked daily |
| SE Ranking | Core $129 | Growth $279 | 2,000 keywords (Core), 5,000 (Growth), tracked daily |
Ahrefs pricing
Ahrefs lists Lite at $129, Standard at $249, Advanced at $449 and Enterprise at $1,499. Lite includes 750 keywords in the Ahrefs rank tracker, 5 non-verified projects, 100,000 crawl credits, 6 months of history and one user. Standard raises that to 2,000 keywords, 20 projects, 500,000 crawl credits and 2 years of history. Advanced lists 5,000 keywords, 50 projects, 1,500,000 crawl credits and 5 years of history.
Ahrefs lets teams add users for $40 on Lite (up to 2), $60 on Standard (up to 5) and $80 on Advanced (up to 10). Ahrefs also lists a $29 Starter plan and a free plan, without limits. Ahrefs offers annual billing that saves "up to 17%", with no annual prices shown. Enterprise requires an annual commitment and is quoted through sales.
Sources disagree in places. Capterra lists Advanced at $499, while the vendor page says $449. One aggregator gives shorter history windows than the vendor page. We use the vendor page throughout.
Semrush pricing
The Semrush page now shows "SEO + AI Search" plans: SEO at $139 ($117.33 on annual billing), Starter at $199 ($165.17), Pro+ at $299 ($248.17) and a custom Advanced plan.
- SEO: 5 websites and 500 keywords tracked daily.
- Starter: 5 websites, 500 keywords and 50 AI prompts daily.
- Pro+: 15 websites, 1,500 keywords and 100 AI prompts daily.
- Advanced: 40+ websites, 5,000+ keywords, unlimited AI prompts and API integration.
Semrush provides a free plan with 1 demo project and 10 reports per day. Semrush offers add-ons including extra users from $45, Lead Generation at $90, Base Report at $10 and Pro Report at $20. Several third-party pages still list the older Pro, Guru and Business names at $139.95, $249.95 and $499.95. Those appear to be out of date next to the vendor page, so check the live page before budgeting.
SE Ranking pricing
The vendor lists Core at $129 ($103.20 on annual billing) and Growth at $279 ($223.20 annual). Core has 10 projects, one manager seat, 2,000 keywords tracked daily, 250,000 audit pages and 25K API credits. Growth has 30 projects, 3 seats, 5,000 keywords, 2 million audit pages and 100K API credits. Enterprise is custom, and annual billing is stated as saving 20%.
An AI search add-on called SE Visible starts at $71 a month, with tiers of 75, 200 and 1,000 prompts. The page does not give a price per tier. Core and Growth already include AI visibility tracking with 25 prompts daily across 5 AI engines.
Older or aggregator pages show cheaper tiers, including a $29.90 entry rate on Capterra. These conflict with the vendor page, which shows nothing below the Core plan. If you see a very low price, check it against the pricing page.
Keyword research and rank tracking
Rank tracking is where the published limits are easiest to compare. At the first paid tier, SE Ranking lists 2,000 daily tracked keywords against 750 for Ahrefs Lite and 500 for the Semrush SEO plan, at $129, $129 and $139. At the second tier the figures are 5,000 for Growth, 2,000 for Ahrefs Standard and 500 for Semrush Starter. Semrush's Pro+ plan lists 1,500.
Those are tracking quotas, not accuracy measures, and a rank tracker's limit says nothing about how closely it matches real positions. One page claims SE Ranking matches Google Search Console positions more closely than Ahrefs, but it names no author or method, so we ignore it. On keyword research, Gizmodo calls the keyword research in both Semrush and SE Ranking excellent. We found no independent, method-backed comparison of keyword difficulty scores across the three, so test how Ahrefs Keyword Explorer and the Semrush Keyword Magic Tool score keywords you already know well.
Backlink analysis: Ahrefs and Semrush against SE Ranking
Aggregators describe Ahrefs as the strongest of the three on backlinks and content research. Gizmodo says the Semrush backlink database is larger than the one in SE Ranking. We found no sourced backlink index sizes for any of the three, so we do not rank them on size. If link research drives your decision, compare the backlink profile of the same domains using the free plans that Ahrefs and Semrush offer, within their limits, and judge the results yourself. The Ahrefs free plan covers data for sites you own, and the Semrush free plan is limited to 1 demo project and 10 reports per day. Our category on link building and outreach tools sits alongside this one for context.
Site audit and technical SEO
SE Ranking lists audit capacity in pages: 250,000 on Core and 2 million on Growth. Ahrefs describes the capacity of its web crawler in crawl credits, from 100,000 on Lite to 1,500,000 on Advanced. The units differ, so the figures are not directly comparable. We found no sourced technical SEO or SEO audit comparison that names a winner, and we do not pick one.
AI search and visibility features
All three now sell artificial intelligence (AI) search features, in different ways.
- Semrush bundles AI prompts into its plans, from 50 daily on Starter to unlimited on Advanced.
- SE Ranking includes 25 daily AI visibility prompts across 5 AI engines in Core and Growth, and sells larger prompt volumes through the SE Visible add-on.
- Ahrefs lists AI prompt checks per plan. Sources give conflicting prices for its Brand Radar product, so we do not quote one.
One competitor page says neither Ahrefs nor SE Ranking tracks ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity or Gemini. That conflicts with the vendor's own page and the publisher sells AI visibility tracking, so we leave it out. What review platforms say
Review platforms do not separate Ahrefs, Semrush and SE Ranking: the three score between 4.4 and 4.8 across G2, Software Advice and TemperStack, and the order changes by platform. On the G2 comparison page, SE Ranking scores 4.7, Ahrefs 4.5 and Semrush 4.4, and Semrush has by far the most reviews. The counts vary between snapshots we saw:
- SE Ranking: 1,567 reviews at 4.7 in one snapshot and 1,432 at 4.8 in another.
- Ahrefs: 705 or 710 reviews at 4.5.
- Semrush: 3,385, 3,872 or 3,970 reviews, at 4.4 or 4.5.
Software Advice shows Ahrefs at 4.7 and Semrush at 4.6. TemperStack shows Ahrefs at 4.8 and SE Ranking at 4.7, the opposite order to G2. The gaps in this data are small and the platforms disagree, so ratings do not pick a winner. Use them to check for recurring complaints.
Other differences worth knowing
- Writing support: a Techjockey comparison summary says Semrush includes an SEO writing assistant and SE Ranking does not.
- Local SEO: TemperStack suggests SE Ranking suits tracking by city or region.
- Seats: Ahrefs charges $40 to $80 per extra user depending on plan, and Semrush charges from $45. SE Ranking lists seats per plan, one on Core and three on Growth.
A pattern to watch in Semrush vs Ahrefs content
Much of the comparison content for these tools is published by vendors. SE Ranking's blog publishes an Ahrefs vs Semrush post and an Ahrefs alternatives post, and its landing page for Ahrefs switchers is marketing. A competitor selling AI visibility tracking also publishes a comparison that favours itself. Several aggregator pages claim the cheaper tool gives most of the functionality at a fraction of the price without showing how they measured it. We treat all of these as marketing, not as evidence. Open Developer takes no payment or affiliate commission from any of the three, and our methodology explains how we work.
How to choose
- Write down your tracked keyword count and the number of sites. The published limits above often decide the plan before features do.
- Match the plan to your SEO goals. Decide whether backlinks, writing support or AI visibility matters most to your seo strategy, then weigh the vendor-reported strengths above.
- Check the live pricing page. Plan names and limits have changed on at least one of the three recently.
- Compare the tools on the same sites and keywords yourself where you can, using the Ahrefs and Semrush free plans within their limits, before paying for an annual plan. TemperStack says SE Ranking has no free plan. Any seo tool is easier to judge on your own data.
