Marketing Mix Modeling (MMM)

A plain-language Open Developer definition.

Definition

What it means

Marketing Mix Modeling estimates the impact of different marketing channels using aggregate, statistical analysis of historical spend and outcomes, rather than tracking individual users across touchpoints. It predates digital advertising and has seen renewed interest as cookie-based, individual-level tracking has become less reliable.

Why teams track it

Why it matters

MMM doesn't depend on tracking individual users, which makes it more resilient to privacy changes (like iOS 14's tracking restrictions) than click-level attribution — but it also works at a coarser level of detail, typically showing channel-level trends rather than which specific ad drove which specific sale. Several tools in our Analytics & Attribution category blend MMM with more granular tracking to get the benefits of both.

Applied context

Where you’ll see this term

Our Northbeam review discusses marketing mix modeling as part of its more research-grade approach to attribution, distinct from the platform-aligned methodology used by tools like Triple Whale.
