AI Image & Video Generation

Still images, avatar video, generative footage, and content repurposing — four different jobs under one category label

This is the most functionally fragmented category on this site. "AI image and video generation" covers at least four genuinely different jobs: still-image generation for creative and campaign work (Midjourney), AI avatar presenter video (HeyGen, Synthesia), generative cinematic footage (Runway), and template-based repurposing of existing content (Lumen5) or AI features bundled into a design tool (Canva Magic Studio). None of these substitute for each other. Read each review's "what it is, who it's for" section before comparing scores across rows in the table below — a 7.6 avatar tool and a 6.2 repurposing tool aren't competing for the same job.

Decision framework

How to actually choose

  • Need a talking-head presenter video without a camera or studio? HeyGen for marketing/social speed and multilingual translation, Synthesia for large-scale compliance-heavy training.
  • Need the best possible still-image creative or campaign visuals? Midjourney — nothing else in this category competes on aesthetic quality.
  • Need genuinely generated video footage — not an avatar, not stock assembly? Runway, with the caveat that you'll be stitching clips together yourself.
  • Already live inside Canva for design work and just need "good enough" AI generation without leaving? Canva Magic Studio.
  • Need to turn existing blog content into quick social video? Lumen5 — but expect template-assembly quality, not generative novelty.

Research signal

A pattern worth naming

Avatar-focused tools (HeyGen, Synthesia) outscored the more technically ambitious creative-generation tools (Runway, Midjourney) in our rubric — not because they're more capable, but because our methodology weights proof of results, ease of use, and support quality alongside raw creative capability, and the avatar tools score more consistently across all six criteria. Runway's Gen-4.5 model has a genuine, benchmarked technical edge that neither HeyGen nor Synthesia can match on pure generative capability — but "most technically impressive" and "best overall by our weighted rubric" are different questions, and this category is the clearest example on the site so far of why that distinction matters.

Buying questions

Frequently asked questions

Is Midjourney a video generation tool? Not really — its "video" feature is an experimental preview of the image-generation process itself, not genuine video output. If you need real AI-generated video, see Runway or an avatar tool.

What's the real difference between HeyGen and Synthesia? Both generate AI avatar presenter video. HeyGen wins on avatar naturalness, language-translation quality, and day-to-day ease of use; Synthesia wins on structured enterprise workflows, brand governance for large teams, and customer support reputation. Total cost of ownership at scale is comparable between them — the right choice depends on use case, not price.

Why does Synthesia have a "minute cap" and does that matter? Yes, genuinely — every Synthesia tier, including paid ones, caps monthly video minutes, and re-rendering after a script revision consumes the full clip's minutes again. Finalize scripts before rendering to avoid burning through your allowance on preventable revisions.
