GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)

A plain-language Open Developer definition.

Definition

What it means

GEO is the practice of optimizing content and technical infrastructure so that generative AI systems — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, and similar tools — are more likely to reference, cite, or recommend a brand when answering a user's question. It's the AI-era analog to traditional SEO, but the target is different: instead of ranking a page on a results list, the goal is to be the source an AI model draws on when constructing an answer.

Why teams track it

Why it matters

Traditional SEO optimizes for a click. GEO optimizes for a mention — often without a click at all, since a generative answer can fully satisfy a user's question without sending them to a website. This changes what "winning" looks like: a brand can be the definitive source behind an AI's answer and see zero referral traffic for it, which is why GEO tracking tools measure citation frequency and sentiment rather than clicks.
