AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)

A plain-language Open Developer definition.

Definition

What it means

AEO is optimizing content so it's more likely to be surfaced directly as an answer — by featured snippets, voice assistants, and increasingly by generative AI systems. In practice, the term is used almost interchangeably with GEO across the industry, though AEO tends to have a slightly broader scope, sometimes including pre-generative "answer" formats like Google's featured snippets alongside AI-generated responses.

Why teams track it

Why it matters

If AEO and GEO sound like the same thing, that's because most vendors treat them that way — the distinction matters more for marketing copy than for actual practice. What matters for a buyer is less which acronym a tool or agency uses and more whether they're tracking real AI-answer citation data (like Profound's Prompt Volumes) versus repackaging traditional SEO reporting with a new label.
