What it means
AI Overviews are Google's AI-generated summary blocks that appear above traditional organic search results for many queries, synthesizing information from multiple sources into a single answer. They're one of several AI-answer surfaces (alongside ChatGPT, Perplexity, and others) that GEO and AEO work aims to influence.
Why teams track it
Why it matters
AI Overviews sit directly at the top of a results page a business has likely already optimized for with traditional SEO — but ranking well organically doesn't guarantee being cited inside the AI Overview itself, which is a separate, distinct visibility target.
